Châteauroux is a commune in Indre with 27,932 registered voters, the largest of the département's 240 communes. At the municipal election of March 2026 53.7% of them voted, fewer than the 62.6% across Indre, and L'AUDACE D'AGIR won 38 of the council's 43 seats in the first round.

In the first round of the 2022 presidential election the commune voted Ensemble (Macron camp) 28.8%, France Unbowed 23.9%, National Rally 20.8%.
