Pontarlier is a commune in Doubs with 12,156 registered voters, the 3rd largest of the département's 558 communes. At the municipal election of March 2026 47.5% of them voted, fewer than the 56.3% across Doubs, and the list led by Patrick Comte won 25 of the council's 33 seats after a second round.

In the first round of the 2022 presidential election the commune voted Ensemble (Macron camp) 32.8%, France Unbowed 20.3%, National Rally 19%. Ensemble (Macron camp) did 5 points better here than across France.
