Rethel is a commune in Ardennes with 4,776 registered voters, the 3rd largest of the département's 446 communes. At the municipal election of March 2026 57.4% of them voted, close to the 57.3% across Ardennes, and the list led by Joseph Afribo won 22 of the council's 29 seats after a second round.

In the first round of the 2022 presidential election the commune voted National Rally 35.4%, Ensemble (Macron camp) 29.3%, France Unbowed 12%. National Rally did 12 points better here than across France.
