Tarare is a commune in Rhône with 6,816 registered voters, the 29th largest of the département's 266 communes. At the municipal election of March 2026 52.4% of them voted, fewer than the 56.7% across Rhône, and Tarare passionnement won 29 of the council's 33 seats in the first round.

In the first round of the 2022 presidential election the commune voted Ensemble (Macron camp) 26.3%, National Rally 25.5%, France Unbowed 24.5%.
