Fretin is a commune in Nord with 2,630 registered voters, the 155th largest of the département's 647 communes. At the municipal election of March 2026 66.1% of them voted, more than the 54.3% across Nord, and the list led by Marie-Jeanne Marseguerra won 18 of the council's 23 seats after a second round.

In the first round of the 2022 presidential election the commune voted Ensemble (Macron camp) 32.2%, National Rally 22.2%, France Unbowed 20.2%. Ensemble (Macron camp) did 5 points better here than across France.
