Barzan is a commune in Charente-Maritime with 396 registered voters, the 268th largest of the département's 462 communes. At the municipal election of March 2026 74.2% of them voted, more than the 58.7% across Charente-Maritime, and the list led by Christine Pugnet won 9 of the council's 11 seats after a second round.

In the first round of the 2022 presidential election the commune voted National Rally 33.2%, France Unbowed 22.5%, Ensemble (Macron camp) 17%. Ensemble (Macron camp) did 11 points worse here than across France.
